The year is 1865 and a French chemist Paul Schützenberger prepares cellulose acetate for the first time. It wasn’t until 1894 that Bevan and Cross patent the process for manufacture.
The first main use for CA came when Henri and Camille Dreyfus made cellulose lacquers in 1910 to water proof and stiffen fabric. CA was a main ingredient in early canvas winged aircraft during WWI.
Cellulose acetate is made from wood pulp and is a natural plastic. The pulp is treated with acetic anhydride ride to make the acetate chips or flakes. As the source material is wood pulp Cellulose Acetate is biodegradable and a renewable resource, unlike injection mold plastics. CA can also be produced from cotton using acetic acid and sulfur acid as a catalyst.

CA frames are individually carved from sheets, you will notice that the nose pads on CA frames are clear as they have been added after the carving of the frame and before the frames are polished. It is a beautiful process, you can check it out below
Why OTC Chose Acetate
I decided to add selected styles to the OTC family after a lot of research into the type of product I wanted make and how it could impact the environment. I immediately rejected normal injection thermoplastics. ie. most of the ‘cheaper’ frames you see online or advertised on Facebook and Google.
This choice makes OTC glasses a little more expensive than molded or injected plastic, but I can rest comfortably and know that OTC Cellulose Acetate Frames won’t still be in a landfill for 450-1000 years.
